Open Source Reading
Free, research-based resources for secondary reading and writing instruction
This website was created in response to feeling completely overwhelmed by teaching secondary reading intervention in a remote learning environment. The challenges that already existed in secondary literacy programs became magnified once I began trying to improve high school students’ reading comprehension online. It is my belief that all students deserve the opportunity to fall in love with reading. So, I combined my passion for teaching secondary reading with my interest in data and research to find and create timely solutions.
All of the resources on this website are rooted in research-based reading instruction and are being made available as open source resources. That is, anyone who has a need is welcome to copy and use them with students. Nothing on this site may be copied and distributed for profit.
This is a new and ongoing work in progress, so please be patient as I take time to add additional resources. However, if there is a specific tool that you wish existed to use with secondary reading students and you have not been able to find it, please email me. I am always looking to get a better understanding of the needs of secondary readers and educators.
“Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development… Literacy is a platform for democratization, and a vehicle for the promotion of cultural and national identity… For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right… Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential.”
