If we want secondary students to comprehend what they read, we need to make sure they understand the individual sentences that make up the paragraphs of text they are reading.
Of course, before students can understand sentences, they must be able to read the individual words within those sentences. If a student still struggles to sound out words, assess to determine gaps in understanding and then include phonics instruction to help build automaticity.
Grammar and Sentence Structure
Many students do not understand how a simple sentence is constructed. They must be able to understand how sentences are constructed before they can put together entire paragraphs of information.
In our classroom, we generally teach grammar as a fun, low-pressure warm-up activity for the first ten minutes of class. We build on these skills in a specific progression:

Students who have difficulty with reading comprehension can sometimes find it easier to practice analysis using pictures rather than text. Additional pictures can be found at the NY Times’ What’s Going on in This Picture website.
